Nang Talung - Reading TwoNang Talung (Southern Thai Shadow Puppet Theater) is a local form of entertainment of the Southern Thais. It is assumed that it originated in Patlung province where it was created and modified by the local inhabitants. It most likely got the name of Nang Talung from its place of origin. It was called "Nang Patalung" by the central Thais. The Southerners simply call it Nang Talung. Nang Talung consists of: figures made from animal skin (cow or buffalo) that is traced over and then perforated into the shape of a human, an ogre, a god, or a hermit, in order to have them be the actors performing roles in a play. An outdoor stage is constructed with a raised floor about two meters (above the surface of the ground) with a roof and three walls. The front wall is a piece of white cloth that forms a screen. The puppeteer uses it as a surface on which to project the voices and movements of the puppets. He chants in glawn (Thai verse) in the local dialect. There are instruments such as the glawng, mong, ching, tap, and pi that combine in playing the music. Most of the stories used in the performance of Nang Talung are local folk tales.
