Basic Concept:  "Dead" vs. "Live" syllables:   Dead syllable ends in a final spoken -p, t, k, or glottal stop (short glottalized vowel). Live syllable is any syllable that is not dead. (In linguistic terms, a dead syllable is "checked" or "stopped" [i.e., the air flow is stopped by closure of the glottis (-k/glottal stop), tongue (-t) or lips (-p)]

          example:  si1p 'ten'  [final -p];  ce1t 'seven' [final -t]; ma3ak 'much, a lot'

      ไปด้วยไหม
ก. ครับ
ข. จะซื้ออะไร
ก. ส้ม กาแฟ ชา บุหรี่ และ ไม้ขีด
   แล้วคุณล่ะ
ข. ผ้าสี่หลาเท่านั้น

Note: A more authentic way of asking someone in face-to-face conversation "Where are you going?" is simply "pay na4y khra2p/kha2." [literally GO + WHERE +/- POLITE PARTICLE). "pay na4y" is also a common greeting - like "hi" is in English - and not a true request for information. The formal pronoun "khun" [you] is dropped, as is "kamlaN ca1?" [to be about to do something]. In place of the pronoun or the dropped pronoun, the speaker can substitute a kin term (e.g., "phi3i" [elder sibling], "lung" [uncle]) or someone's name (e.g., "Somrit," "John"). Both kin terms and names can be preceded by "khun" (sometimes translated as "Mr., Ms., Mrs.) to add a touch of deference, a means of displaying etiquette linguistically. The intent of adding the admittedly inauthentic "kamlaN ca1?" in this conversation is to contrast it with "ya1ak ca1?" [to want to do something] and to show that both have modal or pre-verbal status.

Long version

     ก. ที่นี่มีคนมากนะครับ
     ข. ครับ ผู้หญิง และผู้ชาย ชอบมาซื้อของที่นี่
     ก. ดู มีหลายคนที่โน่น
     ข. เขากำลังซื้ออะไรครับ
