Do you have many factories in this town?

Not many. There's a sugar factory at the edge of town, and beyond that ('continuing on down') a paper factory. These are the only two places which [can] be counted as being on the large side ('being on the side of slightly large'). Besides that there're some small factories, such as sawmills and rice mills.

No. There're a lot of mines in the south. The mining industry is one kind of work which brings in a lot of money ('the most money'), because ore merchants are rich people, every last one of them.

Hardly any. We order most of our machinery from foreign countries, for example, America and England. But we are hoping that one day we'll know how to make various [kinds] of machinery, at least so [we] have enough to use in the country.
At the present time our government sends many students abroad each year to study engineering.
