Point 2. More about numbers

English ภาษาไทย
 ten (10)  สิบ
 hundred (100)  ร้อย
 thousand (1,000)  พัน
 ten thousand (10,000)  หมื่น
 hundred thousand
 (100,000)
 แสน
 million (1,000,000)  ล้าน

Every time another zero is added on Thai has a new term for that number until a million is reached. In English, on the other hand, there is a new term until a thousand is reached; then one counts by thousands until a million is reached. There is nothing complicated about the Thai system--it is actually simpler than the English one--and a little practice will make you feel quite at home with it.

After a million is reached, Thai counting proceeds as follows:

 ten million
 (10,000,000)
 สิบล้าน
 hundred million
 (100,000,000)
 ร้อยล้าน
 billion (1,000,000,000)  พันล้าน
