Kasi gumagamit ako ng sabong Camay... Hindi, mayroon akong tagihawat.  Napuyat kasi ako kagabi.

Hindi biro.  Talagang maganda ang kutis mo. Para kang artista.

In Filipino culture, it is proper to accept compliments in a modest way.  The way to do this is to acknowledge one's flaws or imperfections inspite of the compliment, especially if they pertain to physical attributes.

This exchange between two Filipino women is uncommon and would usually be too personal and embarrassing in an American context.  As if in a commercial advertisement, the person complimented jokingly says that she uses a certain brand of soap, Camay, and proceeds to point out her flaws.  When the subject is pressed further, the person complimented returns the compliment by saying, Ikaw nga itong maganda ('Actually, you are the one is beautiful.').

Mang -   Color Adjectives

The prefix mang-   can be attached to color names and then reduplicated to create an adjectival set equivalent to English adjectives suffixed with "-ish".  Exceptions are rosas, berde (Spanish loan words) which take ma-  .

The same process occurs when mang- is attached to a verb root.

Examples:

mang + pula => mamula-mula = 'reddish'
mang + asul => mangasul-ngasul = 'bluish'

Note that the glottal stop / ' / before initial vowel sounds is replaced by -ng and becomes the initial sound in the reduplicated form.

2.  dilaw  __________________      'yellowish'

3.  rosas  __________________       'pinkish'

4.  puti     ___________________    'whitish'
