Vessel of devotion
ON OCT. 3, the beautiful image of Our Lady of La Naval will be moved from the side altar
to the main altar of Sto. Domingo Church, which signals the start of the nine-day novena
on Oct. 4 at 6:50 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The fiesta Masses, which fall on the
second Sunday of October, which is on the 13th this year, will be held every hour.
A long procession attended by most Dominican saints will be held after the afternoon Mass.
The La Naval procession is one of the most attended in Metro Manila. When the image is
brought back to the main altar, people wait for the image to be safely enthroned and the
"Salve Regina" is sung.
When I asked Adrian Ma. Guerrero what "la naval" meant, he explained: "The
Latin word for ship or "barko" is "nave." Our Lady is the 'ark of the
covenant' because she carried in her womb the child who was to save the world. She is the
vessel of devotion."
Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, who interceded the victory of the two galleons named after
her, and another title, Nuestra Seņora de Encarnacion, defeated the Dutch in 1646. The
Archdiocese of Manila declared "the decree of the miracle" on April 9, 1652,
that through the intercession of Our Lady, the five battles were won.
Because of this decree, permission was granted for a feast to be held, celebrated and
preached.
I got this information from the book "The Story of La Naval" written by Fr.
Roger Cortez, O.P., subprior of the province of the Dominicans in the Philippines.
Father Cortez translated the decree from Spanish to English. It was taken from the
"Almanaque de Nuestra Seņora del Rosario," 1946.
During novenas and fiestas of the Our Lady of La Naval, the church is always full of
people. Our Lady's devotees come faithfully to honor her, thank her for favors granted and
ask for her help. She never fails to help. I can attest to this.

LA NAVAL FIESTA
Oktobre 13 / Angeles City
