The Plain of Jars

Xieng Khuang province is home to an archaeological mystery, the Plain of Jars, an area which lies just outside Phonsavanh, the provincial capital.  Hundreds of jars of all sizes apparently carved from solid stone can be seen scattered over the wide plateau.  The tallest jar reaches a height of 3.25 meters.  Many theories have been put forward to determine their possible use and age but the most likely explanation is that they were made for the fermentation an storage of wine.  it is widely thought that the jars are about 2000 years old but this is still uncertain.
