| May 18, 1999 All Things Considered INDONESIA ELECTION -- NPR's Michael Sullivan reports Indonesia officially begins the campaign tomorrow for a national election in June, following the downfall of President Suharto amid violent demonstrations last Spring. This will be the first free election in Indonesia in 45 years. In the past, only three parties were allowed to compete and the outcome was guaranteed -- the ruling party had to win. A total of 48 parties will compete in this election, and the campaign is expected to be a political free-for-all. (6:00) |

| May 5, 1999 All Things Considered EAST TIMOR -- NPR's Michael Sullivan reports that people in East Timor are being subjected to intimidation and violence by militia groups as the tiny territory moves towards a vote on autonomy versus independence. Separatist groups have waged a guerrilla war against Indonesia since it took over the former Portuguese colony in 1975. An agreement that is to be signed today by the U-N, Indonesia and Portugal is intended to resolve East Timor's administrative future. (4:30) |
