Edwards talks with NPR's Julie McCarthy about the escalating violence in the Indonesian
capital of Jakarta. Indonesian President Suharto cut short an overseas trip to return home

Indonesia Unrest -- NPR's
Julie McCarthy reports signs of eroding support for Indonesia's President Suharto among
the ruling party as the country slides toward anarchy. Armored personnel carriers and
troops have taken to the streets to quell four days of rioting and destruction by people
enraged by price hikes and Suharto's refusal to grant political reform. More than 100
people were killed today when looters set fire to shopping malls, and the death toll could
reach more than 200. Indonesians are waiting to see whether the powerful military will
stand behind Suharto or rally to the side of the country's enraged people. (4:00)
Indonesia Analysis -- All
Things Considered host Linda Wertheimer talks with William Liddle, a professor of
political science at Ohio State University and the author of Leadership and Culture in
Indonesian Politics. They discuss the military crackdown on rioting throughout Indonesia
which has already claimed more than a hundred lives, due to fires related to looting and
rioting last night. Leadership and Culture in Indonesian Politics was published by Allen
and Unwin Press in 1997. (4:00)
