Dictionary

Our Tagalog Online Dictionary's basic contents were based on Dr. Teresita V. Ramos' Tagalog Dictionary published by the University of Hawaii Press, 1971, but we made major modifications on the style and structure of the entries.   The Tagalog root words are the main entries in the dictionary, with the English definition and active/passive forms of Tagalog verbs provided.   Synonyms and variations of the Tagalog terms are also provided (under L2 definition), along with the language origin (entered under Notes) of the words -- e.g., Spanish, Malay, Chinese, Sanskrit.

There are three types of Tagalog dictionaries you can activate using this site:

1) Small Tagalog Dictionary - basically provides you with the English definition of the Tagalog root words;

2) Medium Tagalog Dictionary - provides you with the English definition, L2 definition, Usage examples, Active and Passive forms of the Tagalog root word;  and

3) Large Tagalog Dictionary - shows all textual information for a Tagalog entry at once, in separate text areas.

You don't have to know the root of a Tagalog word or term in order to use the On Site Tagalog Dictionary.  If you want to know the meaning of a Tagalog verb (either in its active or passive form), adjective, adverb, or noun, simply enter the word and the dictionary will give you the root word.  For example, when you enter the word maglalakbay, the dictionary will give you the English definition of the root word lakbay.   Our Tagalog dictionary is programmed to search for the root word of Tagalog words that contain megabytes of syllables, repeating syllables (e.g., bababa -- root word baba (below, chin, to go down), as well as terms that have past, present, and future conjugations of verbs.   Hence, our Tagalog On Site Dictionary is "user-friendly" for Tagalog learners.

So, don't go nuts, you have this Tagalog Online Dictionary to help you find those Tagalog root words and their meaning.  Click on any of the links on the left banner (SMALL, MEDIUM, or LARGE Tagalog Dictionary) to begin looking up for the meaning of Tagalog words.

You can view an .htm file that contains all of the words in our dictionary.  The file is rather large (1.1 megabytes), so it will take considerable time to load if you are using a modem to connect. Once you have viewed the file in your browser, use the browser's "Save as" command (under the File menu) and save the file to your own local hard disk.  Be sure to save the file with an extension of ".htm" without the quotes.  Now you can use your local copy of the dictionary without being connected to the Internet.  Simply start your browser and load the file you saved.  Assume that you saved it on drive D:\, in a directory named Tagalog, and that you saved it with the name "diction.htm".  You can type the following URL in your browser's window to view the file: file://D:\Tagalog\diction.htm  Once the file has loaded, you can use the browser's "Find" command (under the "Edit" menu) to search for words you want to look up.

Click here to view the entire Tagalog Dictionary (1.7 megabytes). Updated 25 June 2001.  Remember to check back here from time to time to see if we have provided a newer version of the dictionary.  After all, we are still adding new words to it.
