The Philippines
is both singular and plural:
singular in that it is a relatively
unified nation,

but plural
in that it is fragmented
between Christians, Muslims,
and other religio-ethno-linguistic
groups;

between
urban and rural peoples;
between
upland and lowland peoples;
and between
the rich and the poor. |

Majority of the population
(about 80 percent)
are Roman Catholic,

and about 5 percent Muslims
who live mostly in
the southern part
of the Philippines.
 |
Metro Manila
is the primary urban center
in the country,
where approximately
10 million people live.

Currently, the estimated
population of the
Philippines is
70 million,

with some
4 million Filipinos
working overseas.
