SitwasyonNag-uusap ang dalawang magkaibigang sina Johnny at Gerry.

JOHNNY:

Kumbidado ka ba sa handaan ni Jimmy?

GERRY:

Bakit, may handaan ba sa kanila?   Hindi ko yata alam yon.

JOHNNY:

Siguro hindi ka pa lang nasasabihan.

GERRY:

Hindi siguro talaga ako kumbidado.  Panya na VIP lang na kamukha mo.

JOHNNY:

Tama ka na.  Nahuli lang siguro ang imbitasyon.

GERRY:

Hindi, talagang malayo na si Jimmy sa mga Pilipino.  Madalas maghanda pero mga 'foreigners' lang ang kumbidado.

JOHNNY:

Alam mo, mahirap dito dahil walang katulong.  Hindi maaaring laging kasali sa lakakaran ang lahat ng mga Pilipino.  Isa pa, kung minsan pinagpaparis-paris ang kinukumbida.  'Yong tinatawag na may 'something in common.'

GERRY:

Bakit, hindi ba tayo marunong makiharap sa taga-ibang bayan?

JOHNNY:

Ay naku, hindi naman sa ganoon siguro.  Masyado ka namang maramdamin.

GERRY:

Huwag mo nang ipagtanggol si Jimmy.  Iba na siya talaga.

cultureNote.gif (2508 bytes)

Filipinos who have moved to other countries can easily adapt to new ways of living.   Often, this can be a source of conflict with other Filipinos who still value the traditional way of doing things, particularly in social gatherings.

In this dialog, Gerry feels left out and thinks that Jimmy no longer wants to associate with Filipinos.  This feeling is called in Tagalog as pagtatampo (root word, tampo) or hinanakit (root word, sakit).  It is a mixture of sadness and hurt, because Gerry expected Jimmy to still hold on to the traditional Filipino value of pakikisama (being in good terms with his fellowmen or fellow Filipinos).  Apparently, Gerry does not accept the excuse that Johnny gives to convince him that Jimmy did not intend any harm.
