Canting is an extremely time-consuming process for producing batik designs.  Metal blocks, or caps method are used to meet the increasing demand for batik in Indonesia.  Stamping  is usually performed by men.  Several pairs of caps in different shapes and sizes may be used for waxing.

The male workers usually stand at square tables to apply the cap designs.  The cap is pressed onto a stamp pad to absorb wax and it is then stamped onto the fabrics or cloth. This process is repeated until the cloth is completely covered by the patterns.  A better quality cap work does not have overlapping secondary lines.   A quality cap workers require great skills to match the design exactly.
